Mentoring
Mentor is an ability granted to characters who have shown competence in a particular art, be it occult, holy, riftmancy and other skills that often require an application.
When granting it to another player, the mentor and pupil are tracked and approved through the appropriate ticketing process, then recorded within the #ability-tracking channel.
At the time of writing (June 14th), there are no formalized rules regarting mentoring; it is all very abstract. However, the following standards should be used when evaluating requests:
- The quality of the roleplay.
- The complexity of the art being taught.
- The student's demonstrated understanding of the subject.
- The consistency of interaction between teacher and student.
A mentorship should feel like a genuine educational process rather than a checklist of requirements. It is up to the judgement of the players to decide if a student is approved or denied-- however, most requests will often deal with the former. No mentor will ticket to have a student failed in their lessons.
Logs
Much like the above standards, mentoring should contain a minimum of three roleplay logs from the lessons between the teacher and student(s).
The logs should briefly go over the art, as well as other lessons (both technical and theorical), and generally should try to display the below:
- Basics of the art
- Questions and discussion regarding the art.
- Practical exercises or demonstrations.
- Evidence that the student is actively learning and applying the material.
Staff should consider if the student/mentor relationship and motives display something unique and special, beyond the "I wish to learn this for X or Y". The more personal it is, the bigger are the chances of a student learning it and being approved.
Timeframe Expectations and Students Limits
While we have no hard rule on how many students you can teach within a year, teaching another should occur over a reasonable in-character timeframe. Given that mentoring is meant to be a one-on-one and would take extreme dedication from the teacher to pupil, we prefer that mentors have at maximum 2 students during the timeframe.
A cooldown between teaching could be set at either 3-5 years. If you finish teaching your student at the year 2025AC, you may take another student at 2030AC. If its a common art, a mentor may take it earlier.
So, as guideline:
- The process of teaching someone should span approximately 3-5 years.
- More difficult arts may require longer periods of study. Riftmancy/wayfinding may take 3 years, while Arcane may push up to 5 years.
- Exceptionally gifted students* may progress faster, but should still demonstrate adequate roleplay and learning.
The intent is so mastery is not rushed through a short time of roleplay, but earned through character progression.
*We judge this based on the character in question, their origins and their previous contact with the art. For example a necromancer teaching a teenager already familiar with undead or necromancers may be allowed to cut the teaching period down to below 3 years.
How to deal with the approval
- A ticket should be filed by the mentor, stating what art and who was the student.
- Mentor should post logs into a rentry or similar. Again, 3+ for all arts.
- Staff should review the logs, judging if it makes sense, the roleplay was of good quality and does not seem like a mere checklist. (aka, student and master trying to hit all the crucial points of the art)
- If approved, the ability in question should be granted and tracked in the channel of #ability-trackers.
- If denied, feedback is to be provided.
Mentors who abuse this system will have their mentorship revoked.
Staff retain discretion to request additional logs, longer timeframes, or further roleplay evidence when dealing with particularly advanced, rare, or complex arts. (Ink magic, Arcane, Necromancy, etc)
Approval of a mentorship is never automatic and should always be based on the quality and substance of the roleplay presented.
